Discover Welkom – Where Nations Meet
Founded in the 1940s to house gold miners, Welkom grew rapidly to become the second-largest city in the Free State, located just 140 kilometres northeast of Bloemfontein. Known for its rich history and unique charm, Welkom also carries the affectionate names Circle City, Mvela, and Matjhabeng—the latter meaning “where nations meet” in Sesotho.
The city’s roots in gold mining date back to 1896, with a major gold discovery in nearby Odendaalsrus leading to Welkom’s official proclamation as a town in 1948. Since then, it has remained a vibrant hub of industry and culture, shaped by the diversity of people who came to work in its mines from countries such as Lesotho, Malawi, and Mozambique.
